In 1918 the men and women of Australia came home. The 'war to end all wars' was over and a young Australian nation had paid for its recognition in the world with the blood and sacrifices of an entire generation.

In 1945 the men and women of Australia came home once more. This time no one spoke of the war to end all wars. Australia had lost its innocence and another generation had suffered.

In every town, village and hamlet across this vast country of ours, statues, memorials and honour boards recognise the sacrifice and honour of those who served.

Now, 50 years after the cessation of hostilities, a nation still gratefully remembers the events of the second world war.

War is not solely about combatants on the fields of conflict. The second world war involved the entire nation. In the factories, the farms and in the home, every Australian was in some way involved.

This publication recognises and records for posterity the memories of those who lived through that dreadful time, and who experienced the joys and feelings of relief on the 15 August 1945. These are the memories of the residents of the district of Mansfield.
